Back in 2015, I decided to close my traditional business and dedicate myself to be digital nomad. And there were already many Americans and Europeans living a traveling life with which through online work they could afford it.

I set myself this challenge and in this article, I am going to tell you according to my experience and that of all the people I know who make this kind of life, what is a digital nomad and how to become a digital nomad.

1. What is a digital nomad?

2. Why be a digital nomad?

Being a digital nomad it gives you a high quality of life that previously you could only live being rich. This model of life not only gives you an income without schedules or physical ties but also gives you the opportunity to travel and know cultures, people and places that most of the upper generations could only read in books.

4. Types of digital nomads

There are two types of digital nomads:

  • The freelance. They work for one or more companies making / sending their homework through the Internet. The professions previously indicated are those frequented by digital nomads.
  • Online entrepreneurs. People who have become independent with online businesses. However, the types of businesses are infinite. Although the most common is:
    • Online stores selling products (Dropshippings, Amazon, Wallapop, etc).

    • Creators of content on social networks: Instagram, YouTube …
    • Agencies (Digital Marketing {SEO, content, social media …} trips, etc).

5. Characteristics of a digital nomad

  1. They are autonomous. They plan their working day, their time of dedication to their work and everything related to the control of their activity. They have a great power of personal self-growth.
  2. They are digital. They need Internet at every moment, that is why it is vital to look for a country and an accommodation with a good Internet connection. Their livelihood comes from this way and is essential.
  3. They are techno-addicts. Not only do they need technologies to be able to carry out their work, but they are also passionate about this world. Hence, they have taken advantage of their passion to realize this model of life that allows it.
  4. They are nomads. They do not spend more than 6 months a year in any country, so they are exempt from personal taxation and even seek to establish fiscally in the country with less business taxation.
  5. They are restless. They are not routine. Every month they practically wake up in a part of the world and do not have a fixed work space. There are more daring people who change every week, as there are those who spend several months in the same place. However, it is advisable to be between 15-30 days in each place so as not to weaken the quality of work by traveling.
  6. They are global. They do not feel much of any place but of all places a little.
  7. They are adventurous. They want enormously to know the world and its cultures, that is why they make this lifestyle to make the most of their time to discover the world.
  8. They are summer. Mostly they seek warm places to settle down, since the living conditions in these places are more suitable to be able to enjoy the time in that place.
  9. They are backpackers. His passion is to travel and as any experienced traveler learns to move with backpack for comfort and ease of movement in any type of environment. There are more established in the digital nomad world and have their own transport system like a caravan or well-wagon.
  10. They are collaborative. The digital person style is always understood to be people who do not collaborate with others and are isolated from the world. It is not true. This person profile is very entrepreneurial and to be successful undertaking digitally you must be very collaborative and oriented to create communities.

6. Process to become digital nomad

In order to become a digital nomad, you may have to follow these steps more or less:

  1. Study a master's / master's / course in their respective specialties.
  2. Take experience in jobs as a beginner until you have the necessary experience to be a specialist or a manager as are all the posts cited.
  3. To speed up the process, it is recommended have own projects or work on third party projects independently.
  4. After these steps, you will be prepared to be an online entrepreneur or to be a digital nomad via freelance.

7. Tips to be a digital nomad

  1. Form yourself digitally. A very interesting option is to train with online courses and be very self-taught. Your tool is internet, try to do everything in this way. If you're not very digital, this profession does not go with you.
  2. Traveling is your passion. If you do not like to travel, give up before you start. But of course, we all like to travel but not in any way. You must be little attached to the material and adapt to any situation that is not luxury. You will not live in luxury until many years have passed. In fact, you tend to travel to affordable places. Your income will try to focus on investments and not luxuries.
  3. Find a mentor who is already a digital nomad. And there is a lot of business mentor out there but his approach will be different: "work ahead of everything". In the case of a digital nomad, living is ahead and this lifestyle is ahead of work.
  4. Start from home with your own projects and as soon as you can, participate in other projects. Until you generate € 1,000 per month, do not consider traveling.
  5. Your goal is to create your own project. After the previous phases, you will create your own projects with which you will be successful. However, it will not be easy for you in your first project to achieve results. Without experience there will not be many success options.
  6. Choose an unsaturated niche. Now you must seek to specialize in a subnicho in which to stand out and have little competition.
  7. Motivation. Along the way you will have many ups and downs. Let's say that this type of life for many will be an impossible dream. It's going to be difficult for you, so you should be constant and not lower your arms.
